Memory cOnsolidation is referred to as the process that would be stabilising a race of memory after it has been initially acquired. There are two separate processes, the synaptic cOnsolidation, in which there would be a late phase potentiation, which occurs in a few hours of learning as well as systems cOnsolidation, where, the memories that are dependent on the hippocampus would be becoming independent through weeks and years. Further, another process has come into light, which is referred to as the process of reconsolidation, where, the memories that have been previously consolidated, would be made inactive through reactivation of the trace of memory.
Psychologists study cOnsolidation by carrying out different experiments in which the effects of enhanced memories have been studied. The general method of a blogett 1929 have been used, where, the rats had been rewarded. The control group had saline administered. It was found that the group to which drug was administered. The performance of the rats were studied after training. But, with subsequent trials, it was observed that there were significant changes after five trials.
Example: when I began studying the vocabulary Flashcards every day, they became embedded in the memory to become consolidated. This works better than cramming a night before the exam.
