- Piaget's theory of cognitive
development described that a child grows through four stages
preoperational, sensorimotor, concrete operational , formal
operational stage. The theory explains that a child gathers
information and adapt through assimilation, accommodation,
equilibration and schemas. The criticism came from Weiten that this
theory has underestimated the development of children. Also, there
is a possibility that the child mixes up two stages and doesnot
distinctively progresses.Or any individual differences causing no
general achievement of goals.
- According to me, Piaget's theory
has well explained the cognitive development through stages. At
sensorimotor stage (0-2 years) the main aspect is objective
performance, which means that the object (such as toy) exists even
if its hidden. The second stage is preoperational stage (2-7
years)where the key aspect is 'thinking' , in other words, that an
object has a symbolic name.
- In the third stage , the key
achievement is 'operational thought', whereas in 4th stage the main
trait is abstract and logical thinking.
