given a group assignment and you have a non
collaborative team member who wants to share in the credit;
1. what do you say to a non collaborative team member
?
2. what do you say to your superior?
3. when do you talk to them?
4. how do you do it without been 'bad mouth' as much as you hold on
to your value of honesty?
1. A one to one confrontation must be done with the non-collaborative team member. A group assignment needs to be done by all members of the group. A member cannot be a free rider and enjoy on the efforts of others. It will be unfair to the other members of the group and will not attribute to any kind of learning of the non-collaborative member. Hence in a one to one confrontation, the situation can be made clear to the member and make him realize that it will be in the interest of the group that he collaborates and perform.
2. The superior can be given the real picture about the team as the overall synergy and productivity of the team is getting impacted from this situation.
3. The superior must be approached only when the non-collaborative member turns a deaf ear to the team’s discussion and continues with his free rider behavior. The non-collaborative member can be given a final warning before approaching the superior.
4. This is not a case of bitching or bad mouthing. If the overall team is suffering then it is the duty of the team representative to give a best shot to revive the team. By giving the real time snapshot of what has been happening in the team, the superiors can be approached with the hope that they will help the non-collaborative member and make him, change his attitude.
