How does gender socialization influence who runs for office and for whom we vote? How are female politicians treated by the media, compared with male politicians? How has that impacted your own perception of female politicians?
One of the most important things about politics is that it’s still considered to be a men’s affair. Discrimination and differential treatment of women in politics just like any other field has left women without any scope for pollical power. This is one of the reasons America hasn’t got any female president yet while most of the countries have had female presidents and prime ministers. Women also think that they do not have any interest in politics because they don’t understand it. Women would be able to gain upper hand in politics only if they come in large numbers and create a momentum. Media still represents the male politicians and their views more than the female politicians because they also believe that people wouldn’t take them seriously due to the social norms that define gender roles and because men wouldn’t want a woman to rule them. It has definitely affected my political view and affiliations because what we see and listen for a long time would influence our attitudes and beliefs.
