One of the most important traditional gender roles is that it expected men to be the provider and protector while women to stay at home and take care of the children and the household works. However, women fought for their rights and proved their worth in almost all the fields that were once considered as men’s spot. This would mean that progressive era was characterized by industrialization and urbanization. Women gained control of their finances when they started to work in the emerging industries that needed more man power for cheap labor. Women were the obvious choice and it also helped women by gaining economic independence that naturally liberated them from their traditional gender role of looking after the household affairs. The increasing urbanization broke the traditional joint family system and introduced nuclear families in the society, thus men and women shared most of the tasks among themselves because they had no one else to do things for themselves.
