Estimate the theoretical amount of air that required to completely
burning one kilogram of benzene (C6H6). If the air in the mixture is made
10% deficiency; find the equivalence ratio and wet analysis of the
products.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The stoichiometric equation for 1 mole of benzene is written and then number of moles for 1 kg of benzene are obtained. Then number of moles of air required are calculated. Once the number of moles required for air are calculated, then the mass of air required can be obtained. If the air is 10% deficient, then the mass of air can be calculated. Once the mass of air is calculated, the number of moles for air can be obtained. The equivalence ratio is then calculated as the ratio of Fuel to air in actual case to the Fuel and air in the stoichiometric case. The chemical reaction equation with deficient air is then written and the moles of the products are obtained. The product side will be fuel rich as the fuel air mixture is lean and the complete combustion didn't happened.
