Prolonged use of MDMA (ecstasy) has what effect on sexual function?
Ecstasy (MDMA) acts as a stimulant and hallucinogen. It works on serotonin levels in the brain that increases pleasure making the mood of an individual better. Ecstasy floods the brain with serotonin. When the drug goes off, serotonin levels are depleted in the brain, causing side effects including depression, exhaustion, sleep problems, confusion, and(or) anxiety.
Ecstasy may also increase sex drive by increasing physical sensitivity, and intimacy. However, Ecstasy is known to decrease sexual performance in both males and females. They may be unable to attain orgasm. Difficulty in ejaculating, which is a symptom included of "erectile dysfunction" (ED), can occur in men. Drugs like Ecstasy can have an effect on a man's penis, making arousals, erection, or ejaculation difficult. Though the effect is not usually permanent, prolonged use of Ecstasy can make these effects last long after the person stops using Esctasy.
