A cylinder with a moveable piston contains 0.553 mol of gas and has a volume of 256 mL .

What will its volume be if an additional 0.246 mol of gas is added to the cylinder? (Assume constant temperature and pressure.)

Solutions

Expert Solution

V1 = 256 ml , n1 = 0.553 mole

V2 = ?          , n2 = ( 0.553 + 0.246 ) mole = 0.799 mol

PV = nRT ( P, V and R are constants )

therefore V is proportional to the n = no of moles of gas

V1 / V2 = n1 / n2   ===>    V2 = ( n2 / n1 ) x V1

                                                  = ( 0.799 mol / 0. 553 mol ) x 256 ml

                                                  = 369.88 ml

A cylinder fitted with a piston has an initial volume of 0.1 m3 and contains nitrogen at 150 kPa, 25 0C. The piston is moved, compressing the nitrogen until the pressure is 1 MPa and the temperature is 150 0C. During this compression process heat is transferred from the nitrogen, and the work done on the nitrogen is 20 kJ. Determine the amount of this heat transfer.
