Acute respiratory failure is the failure of gas exchange in the lungs. The lungs fail to deliver oxygen to the tissues or eliminate CO2 from the body.
ARF can be caused by diffusion abnormalities, alveolar hypoventilation, shunt and v/q mismatch.
