The presentation should have a title slide and a reference slide. They are not included in the slide count.
A Paediatric condition: Bronchitis
TITTLE : BRONCHITIS
SLIDE 1
Introduction: Respiratory conditions, are super common in children, such as common cold , asthma , bronchitis, bronchiolitis, pneumonia etc. Paediatric Bronchitis is one of the major respiratory condition that affect child's health and quality of life.
Slide 2
Bronchitis:
An inflammation of bronchi of the lungs , that causes the cilia of the bronchial epithelial cells to stop functioning . It may be Acute or chronic
( Acute: Suddenly evolving, chronic : long standing and serious)
Slide : 3
Epidemiology : Bronchitis,. both Acute and Chronic, is one of the top 5 reasons for the paediatric consultation in United States. It is mainly seen in babies below 2 years or children younger than 15 years(peak incude: 9- 15 years), and both male and female affected with this condition.
Slide 4
Etiology :
Acute bronchitis
* Viral or bacterial infection ( same virus that causes cold). Eg: Adino virus , Rhino and influenza virus. Streptococcus Pneumoniae, H. Influenzae etc.
Chronic bronchitis:
* Allergy from Air pollution, chemical fumes, dust
* passive smoking ( smoke inhaled from another active smoker, such as a family member)
Slide 5
Risk factors:
* Family history of chronic bronchitis
* Smoking
* Asthma or allergies
* weaker immune system
slide 6
Pathophysiology
Due to etiology/ infection/ allergy
? ( leads to)
Irritation in the mucosal lining of brinchial tubes
?
Inflammation, results in increased production of mucous, swelling and pain
?
ASL ( Airway surface liquid) dehydration and mucociliary dysfunction in patient leads to less clearance of mucous secretion
?
Bronchospasm and less clearance of secretion
?
chest pain, cough and shortness of breathing
Slide 7
Clinical manifestations :
Productive cough ( with clear, yellow or green mucous)
Retrosternal pain , chest pain ( During breathing and coughing)
Shortness of breath
whistling or wheezing sound when breathing.
Slide 8
* Child may complain about body aches and chills
* low fever
* stuffy or runny nose
* sore throat
Slide 9
Diagnostic Evaluation :
* Physical examination and History collection for the symptoms
* Chest x-ray
* Chech oxygen saturation of child's blood
* lung function test with a Spirometer
* Blood test to rule out infection
* Sputum test to identify the bacteria.
Slide 10
Therapeutic management :
Medication:
* Antibiotics to treat bacterial infection
* Antiinflammatories to reduce inflammation of brinchial lining
* Broncodialators to relieve brinchospasm
* Expectorant to increase the expectoration of mucous out of the lungs.
* Oxygen administration as per physician's order
Slide 11
Non therapeutic and nursing measures
* Steam Inhalation by a humidifier
* Provide a hot shower to child
* Adequate rest to the child
* Encourage the child to take plenty of water
Slide 13:
Nursing measures
* Provide adequate ventilation for the child by a low speed fan : air movement can ease breathing.
* Provide a comfortable position to the child. Semi sitting position can ease breathing due to more lung expansion.
*Be with the child. Provide a comfortable atmosphere.
* Don't give any cold food or drinks
* instruct the parents to avoid smoking.
