In 1--2 well developed paragraph, Discuss the creation stories in Popul Vuh (creation of the world and humans) and compare them to two other creation stories - Genesis and Ovid's Metamorphasis. Are there any universals (ideas/beliefs found in all the stories)? What about the Popul Vuh creation story do you find different or unique in comparison to the other ones we read?
The term 'Popul Vuh' suggests 'Book of the Community'. It narrates the creation of the human beings. It is said that animals were first created. Then human beings were created. At first human beings were created with mud. But it failed. Then it was created by wood. It also failed. In this story, the creator is the Heart of the Sky. There were other deities including Feathered Serpent. They wanted to create human beings with heart and mind. They created human beings out of yellow and white corns. In another epic it is said that human beings were created by The Twins. They became Sun and Moon and they played active role in the creation of animals, human beings and corns and forest.
In the Genesis, it is said that human beings were made by God in His own image. Human world is created out of chaos. In the second story of Genesis it is said that God created Adam and Eve out of his image. The fall of Adam and Eve is the beginning of the human beings on earth.
According to Ovid, human beings were created out of Chaos. There is great similarity between Genesis and Ovid in the creation of the human beings. In this story the creation is presented in four stages- golden age, silver age, bronze age and Iron age. The process of creation is shows as a gradual process.
