There are many laws that directly impact the practice of a nurse, but the law 246-840-700 from the Washington administrative code describes the minimum standards for nursing conduct. In summary it states that nurses should feel competent enough in their job to be able to complete the nursing process of assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementing, and evaluation (WAC 246-840-700). Being able to perform these nursing tasks will provide the best care for patients and help nurses to avoid making mistakes. This law also talks about nurses taking accountability in their actions and reporting any mistakes that might happen. This includes using sound judgement to delegate tasks and supervise unlicensed medical personnel. If a nurse is unable to follow these rules of conduct then they can be disciplined under the RCW 18.130. Discipline could include being fired from your facility or you could lose your licence so make sure you are able to abide by these rules and provide exceptional nursing care to your patients.

Washington state nurses are required to complete 531 hours of paid, unpaid, or volunteer time and 45 hours of continuing education every 3 years in order to renew their nursing license (Continuing competency). You can complete the continuing education hours by earning different certifications or by attending events held by different nursing associations. Completing these hours will ensure that you are able to follow these specific regulations. Every state requires different education and practice hours in order to renew based off of their rules and regulations.
