Describe the history, structure and functioning of the IAEA.
History
By IAEA in the present context is the abbreviation of International Atomic Energy Agency. Formed on 29 july 1957, which promote peaceful usage of nuclear energy. POTUS of that time Dwight D Eisenhower proposed the formation of such safekeeping agency.it's main purpose is the control of fissile material that can be used for productive nuclear energy or for destructive purposes. Former US congressman W Sterling Cole served as the first acting director of IAEA. Current director is the argentine candidate Rafael Grossi.
Structure and functioning
The three main pillars of IAEA are 1) Safety and Security 2)
Science and technology 3) Safeguard and verification. It is not a
UN controlled agency but it does report to UN. IAEA does much of
it's work with security council. IAEA has 3 bodies- Board of
governors, General conference and Secretariat.
In 2004 IAEA developed a programme of action for cancer theraphy
(PACT). It helps developing countries to achieve technological
advancement for the treatment for cancer. It helps developing
nations to develop systematic nuclear power programme for
constructive purposes. the board of governors consist of 22 member
states which selected by general conference. These members are
designated for one year term. The general conference made up by all
the 171 member states. once in a year they all meet around
september to approve the action and budget passed down by
governors. The main function of General conference is to serve as a
forum for the debate on current issues and policies. Secretariat is
the professional and general staff of IAEA. It is headed by
director general. Director general is responsible for the
enforcement of action through secretariat. The director general is
selected by the board of governors on 4 year contract. He oversees
6 department in secretariat that do the actual work in carrying out
the policies.
