Option 1: In our readings this week there is an extensive discussion on educating children in their early childhood years. Based on what you know about Piaget's stages of cognitive development, what type of early childhood education program would you want your child to attend? Why?
Option 2: A young man was sentenced to serve 10 years for selling a small amount of marijuana when he was 15 years old. He escaped from prison six months after his sentencing and moved to a different state. The authorities located him when he went to vote, 30 years later. He is a professional carpenter and a model citizen. Should he be sent back to prison to serve the remainder of his 9.5-year sentence? Why or why not? Is your answer to this question based in the preconventional, conventional or postconventional level of moral reasoning? Should the level of moral reasoning be based on the stage of development that the man was in when he escaped from prison, or when he was located by authorities? Explain.
Review Kohlberg's Levels of Moral Reasoning from your text by clicking on tabs below:
1.The education of children in their early childhood is very crucial. Piaget's theory of how child's cognition -meaning of the knowledge and understanding about the world develops between birth and adulthood.
A.Sensorimotor Stage(0-2 Yrs)-Infant starts to build an understanding of the world through their senses by touching ,grasping, watching and listening.Infant develop object permanence (Infant understands that the object still exists even when they are not able to see, touch smell or hear it.)
B.The Preoperational Stage(2-7yrs)-Children develop language and abstract thought.Children begin to use symbolic play, draw pictures and talk about the things that happened in the past.
C.Concrete Operational Stage(7-11 yrs)-Children learn conservation the idea that object as water or modelling clay remains the same even when its appearance changes.
D.The Formal Operational Stage(11+ years)-Children learn logical rules to understand abstract concepts and solve problems.
I want my child to be involved in the creative activities so that his cognitive development may enhance and his thought becomes more abstact and operational. Eg-Play activities like blocks playing(enhancing the cognitive development of child),Practical Studies(Helping him to have practical exposure in academics)
2.Kohl Berg's Stages of Development includes following stages-
A.Pre-Conventional Morality(9 year old or Younger)-We don't have a personal code of morality. Our moral code is shaped by the standards of adults and consequences of following or breaking the rules.
B.Conventional Morality(adoloscents and adults)-We begin to internalise the moral standards of valued adult role model.
C.Post Conventional Morality-Individual judgement is based on self chosen principles and moral reasoning is based on individual rights and justice.
I don't think he must be given punishment of pending years because when he was 15 year old he was having the preconventional morality and was not aware of the morals and code of conduct but after when he got adult he internalised the moral standards and values and become a professional and moral citizen.
