5. As a trucking transportation systems manager how do
you deal with labor unions? Explain the
"rights" of the union worker and the "rights" of you .....the
management.
Manager should look following points while dealing with labor union in trucking transportation system-
1. Tell the truth- trust is one of the most important factors in union management relations. Trust requires honesty and deals cannot be done without trust.
2. Maintain productive behavior- manager has right to expect proper performance and to maintain a workplace without serious interference in getting work done.
3. Use “work now, grieve later” rule as a guide- first tell them to do work properly and then get benefits
4. Take fair and unbiased decisions
5. Do not respond in kind to pettiness and provocations
6. If union is misbehaving or attacking personally then stand up and walk out is always permissible. Threatening or actually imposing discipline may cross the line
7. Do not be afraid to talk things out- as they are generally not literate so manager should talk them politely and according to their understanding, so they can understand clearly
8. Do not make quick decisions unless it is most important
Rights of union workers are as follows-
1. Any worker can join or form union without interference, restrain or coercion from the management
2. Engage in collective bargaining
3. Right to strike if necessary
4. Right to refuse unsafe work
5. Right to know
6. Right to be provided a reason for being termination
7. Right to negotiate for favorable working conditions
Rights of manger are as follows-
1. Right to determine the way of working
2. Right to make employee work
3. Right to terminate employees by giving notice, if they done something unfair or illegal
4. Right to expect orders to be followed, not debated
5. Right to get required information in order to fulfill managerial functions properly
6. Right to expect top performance
7. Right to effect change
8. Right to employ talented or skilled employees
