Answer.
The DSM -5 represents a transformation of health care institutions towards providing high-quality services to diverse cultural groups and eliminating disparities by assessing the magnitude and nature of a disorder along both medical diagnost criteria as well as cultural and social assessment of the patient’s condition based on his/ her immediate environment. the DSM-5 Cross-Cultural Issues Subgroup (DCCIS) came together to produce a tool : the Cultural Formulation Interview (CFI) which is comprised of a series of questionnaires that assist mental health professionals in making person-centered cultural assessments to inform diagnosis and treatment planning.
With the publication of DSM-5, the CFI has become the most widely used operationalized method for implementing the kind of cultural assessment which facilitates the elicitation of the patient’s own narrative of illness. A more holistic clinical diagnosis is made after incorporating the views of members of the patient’s social network, in order to better place him or her in the context ofhis/ her own community as a baseline standard and help the patient more fully in the treatment process.
The CFI can be used in clinical encounters where there are obvious and also trivial cultural difference between clinicians and patients and help clarify the confusion in reporting symptoms, the details about the patient’s life and other invisible influences and approach specific aspects of care.
