Describe the differences between media bias (type I), media bias (type II), and propaganda. Give an example of each of these.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Macquall identified many kinds of media biases based on two variable set. Hidden or open and intended or unintended.

Type 1 when bias is open and intended. Example A editorial page describing the positive aspect of Facebook and it's advantages over other social media.

Type 2 Unintended and open . Here intention is not for bias but topics are selected in such a manner that it appears to be a bias.

eg selection of news of human right violation from China on front page .

Though intention might no be highlighting China but it appears that there is bias against China.

Propaganda here the bias is hidden but intended. Here the agenda is subtly incorporated in news. Agenda is disguised as objective news and is difficult to differentiate.

eg A news item that describe life of an average American to be exploitative showing few cases . This way they create an image that a ericans live in highly exploitative condition.
