Consider the different communities to which you belong:
What is the geopolitical community in you live? Why is it geopolitical?
What is a phenomenological community to which you belong? Why is it a phenomenological community?
What would some challenges and benefits be for community health nurses in providing care for different communities? For similar communities? For the same community? What are some possible solutions to the challenges?
What, if any, global health issues are present in your community? Are there any ethnic subcommunities within your community? What considerations need to be addressed?
A geopolitical community is a spatial designation refering to a geographical area or place.Geopolitical communities are formed by either natural or human-made boundaries.Examples for natural boundaries are mountains, rivers, lakes etc. while human made boundaries can be structural(roads, canals, bridges or rail road tracks),political(can be comprised of city, county, state, provincial, territorial or country lines) or legal in nature.
The differences in the geopolitical boundaries can be seen between counties of New York City or any other major cities of USA.Example for political boundaries can be observed in school districts or congressional districts.
A phenomenological community is described as an assembly of individuals who share the same viewpoint, relationships, values, interests, beliefs and goals.Such a community is more of a "relational rather than spatial designation"(Maurer &Smith,2013).This type of community may sometimes necessarily share geographical boundaries.Good examples of phenomenological communities could be religious, cultural and social groups for their values and beliefs set them apart from other groups.
Community health nurses meet many challeges and difficulties when they confront with different community groups like
1.language and cultural barrier
2.autonomous nature of their work in which practice without professional supervision takes place
3.having to work in collaboration with other public health disciplines who may have different perspectives
To overcome these challenges and to ensure continuous quality practice ,some possible solutions could be
peer review,
reflective practice,
goal settings,
obtaining knowledge of different cultures and practices, and
self evaluation.
If global health issues present;
the leading global risks for mortality in the world are high blood pressure(responsible for 13% of deaths globally),tobacco use(9%),high blood glucose(6%),physical inactivity(6%),and overweight and obesity(5%).These risks are responsible for raising the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease diabetes and cancers. The leading global risks for burden of disease as measured in disability-adjusted life years(DALYs) are underweight(6% of global DALYs) and unsafe sex(5%),followed by alcohol use(5%) and unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene(4%).
Public health nurse play a vital role in keeping people infomed when it comes to infectious diseases and other potential health risks to a given population. The role of public health nurse depends heavily on their ability to devolop adequate response plans.Promoting healthy lifestyles;vaccination education, health screenings, health education, and exercise programs .
