We think of the “traditional family” as husband, wife, and two kids, with the wife staying home to raise the kids. Yet, this family pattern has not been the norm for most societies or for most of U.S. history. Why do we call this the traditional family? What benefits and costs are associated with this type of family?
please at least 200 words response
One of the most important changes came in the family system in the US with the introduction of industrialization which helped people from the traditional joint families in the villages who depended on agriculture to move to the cities in search of better life. This would mean that almost everyone was new in the cities who met and started their own families. The crowded environment, poor living conditions and lack of economic prosperity made families small and it led to form the modern nuclear families with husband, wife and two children. Another important factors that influenced this family system to become predominant was the increasing individual rights which helped people become more independent and made them move away from their own families to form their families. Society’s gender norms ensured that women stay at home and take care of the household works, children and their husbands while men were expected to provide and protect the families. Nuclear family gained momentum with the introduction of the American Dream and the modern American society. However, today the concept is not anymore practiced due to the increase in live-in relationship, lack of marriage relationship, increased number of LGBTQ families, grandparent families etc. Nevertheless, it’s a growing phenomenon in the collective cultures.
