A U-shaped tube is filled mostly with water, but some vegetable oil has been added to both sides of the U tube. On the right side of the tube, the depth of oil is 7.00cm . On the left side of the tube, the depth of the oil is 2.80cm . The density of the water is 1.00

Solutions

Expert Solution

Patm = atmospheric pressure.

= density of oil = 9.2 x 102

= density of water = 1 x 103

on the right side ::

depth of oil = a = 7 cm

depth of water = b

pressure on right side = Patm + g a + g b                              Eq-1

on the left side ::

depth of oil = c = 2.80 cm

depth of water = d

pressure on left side = Patm + g c + g d    Eq-2

using pascals law

pressure on right side   = pressure on left side

Patm + g a + g b   = Patm + g c + g d

a + b   = c + d             (Patm and ''g'' cancel out both side)

(a - c) = (d-b)

(d-b) = (a - c) /

d - b = (9.2 x 102 ) (7 - 2.8) / (1 x 103 )

d - b = 3.864

diference in level = (a + b ) - ( c + d)

inserting the values \

diference in level = (7 + b ) - ( 2.8 + d)   = 4.2 + b - d = 4.2 - 3.864 = 0.336 cm
