Evidence based practice in nursing is applied in order to
provide quality care based on the evidence and research done on
particular subject or procedure. There are certain barriers /
obstacles when implementing EBP practically, One example of EBP is
using 5 moments of hand rub to prevent hospital acquired
infections. Following are the example of obstacles of implementing
EBP:
- Time management : Nurses have a lot going when
they are on duty which starts from monitoring patients vitals,
administering medications, going for doctors round, doing the lab
work and documentations, hence to take out time from all of these
and implementing the practice would be time consuming.
- Staff patient ratio : As we all are aware that
there is globally shortage of nurses hence the nurse patient ratio
is always more which could also be an obstacles in implementing
EBP.
- Communications : Communication between the
nurses and the policy makers are one of the biggest obstacle as
they are not applying the protocols clinically hence they have very
little knowledge about the problems which the nurses might face
while applying the new policy.
- Lack of training : Nurses will require proper
training and knowledge with the rationale about what they are doing
and what could go wrong.
