  • Gender dysphoria refers to the conflict an individual faces between one's physical gender(sex) and the gender with which he or she tends to identify with. For instance,a person might be born male, but identifies more with his feminine side.Biological sex is assigned at birth, but gender is a social construct, with which one tends to identify or feel more comfortable with.
  • People facing this conflict keep feeling that they are of the wrong sex as they strongly identify with the other sex. They experience physical discomfort in their sex as well as psychological and emotional distress. Some people may identify with the opposite gender and some do not identify with any gender.
  • Its not a mental illness, but just a conflicting human behaviour which can be resolved through interventions. Some people also try to go for surgery to alter their sex, since they prefer to live with the gender they have chosen for themselves.
  • The first signs could be seen in childhood, when a child feels uncomfortable and refuses to wear clothes matching their biological sex, they might be more interested in taking up activities of opposite gender and may feel trapped inside their bodies. In some children this feeling surpasses with age and in some in stays, leading to increased conflict.

For example, did transpeople, agender folks, non-binary folks exist before mainstream society acknowledged them? Additionally, why is today being declared a different moment for more open conversations around gender identities and gender categories than the past—what has shifted to make this happen?
