How do you explain co-dependency to a therapy client, who is interested in attending a group therapy session? How do explain co-dependency as a psycho-education group in a few sentences?
We can explain codependency to a therapy client by stating that codependency is a type of observed behaviour in any relationship where the individual is facilitating the addiction or poor mental health or other individual in the relationship. This usually happens when the later is highly dependent on the former and the former has not established strong boundaries which might be preventing the later in developing essential psychological coping mechanisms. Group therapies can be a great way to dissociate from codependent behaviour because it helps in formation of new relationships which are context relevant and divide their dependency on multiple dimensions including self.
Psychoeducation groups may refer to a specific type of group therapy where the focus is on educating the individuals associated with the group about their own disorders which helps in the formation of an insight and facilitate them in recovering. We can explain codependency to a psychoeducational group using native definitions and examples because psychoeducational groups work around the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy. The approach is to believe that it is the thought process of an individual that influences their behaviour and formation of belief so by educating them about their own disorder we help them in gaining a different perspective on the disorder which will alter their thought process, ultimately changing the undesired behaviour.
