Definition: Shock is a life-threatening condition of circulatory failure. The effects of shock are initially reversible, but may become irreversible resulting in multi-organ failure and death. Shock is defined as a state of cellular and tissue hypoxia due to reduced oxygen delivery or increased oxygen consumption or inadequate oxygen utilization.
Yes, hospitalisation and advanced care in a medical setting is necessary. The patient may require oxygen, intravenous fluids, blood transfusion. Blood and urine tests, radiological scans may be required. Treatment may depend after identifying the cause of shock
First aid for shock:
• Make the person lie down.
• Elevate the person’s feet about 12 inches, unless there is no head or spinal injury.
• Do not raise person’s head.If the person is vomiting or bleeding, turn the person to one side.
• Loosen tight clothing around neck, chest and waist.
• If person is not breathing, begin cardio pulmonary resuscitation
• Immobilise fractures
• Keep person warm and comfortable.
• Monitor for breathing, pulse and skin colour at regular intervals.
• Keep the person still. Do not move unless needed to.
