The Rule of nine is also called as Wallace Rule of nine. It is tool used by trauma and emergency medicine providers to assess the total body body surface area involved in burn patients.Measurement fo the first burned surface area is very important for estimation of fluid rquirements for the patients withe burns will have huge fluid losses due to the removal of the skin barrier.
The estimation of burned body surface for Adult are,
The head and neck is 9 %(4.5 anterior and posterior)
Right arm is 9 %(4.5 anterior and posterior)
Left arm is 9 %(4.5% anterior and posterior)
Trunk is 36 % (18% anterior and posterior)
Perinium is 1%
Right leg is 18%(9% anterior and posterior)
Left leg is 18%(9% anterior and posterior)
Total 100%
For Children:
Head is 18%
Right arm is 9 %(4.5 anterior and posterior)
Left arm is 9 %(4.5% anterior and posterior)
Trunk is 36 % (18% anterior and posterior)
Right leg is 14%(9% anterior and posterior)
Left leg is 14%(9% anterior and posterior)
Total 100%
2.Example for Children :
A child pulls a pot of boiling water down the gas stove, The child suffers burns to his entire head and the posterior portion of his torso. He suffers burns to his left leg.
The percentage of his body has beer burned aare as follows
Head - 18%
Posterios of Torso - 18%
Left Leg - 14%
Total - 50%
Example for Adult :
A 35 year old male sustains 3rd degree burns froma an explosion. He sustains burns to the entire legs, anterior aspect of his chest abdomen and groin.
The total percentage of his body are as follows;
Both Legs - 36%
Chest - 9%
Abdomen - 9%
Groin - 1%
Total - 55%
