• Critics of adoption have sometimes argued that children need to grow up in families who match their ethnicity, lest they develop a confused sense of identity. According to this viewpoint, ethnically Asian children should be raised in Asian families, black children in black families, Latino children in Latino families. But in practice, because most adoptive parents in the U.S. are white, many adoptions are transracial, as minority children are placed in white families.
• A recent study adds to substantial evidence that concerns about transracial placement have been overblown and that, in fact, children are capable of developing a solid sense of identity and family regardless of the racial composition of their families.
• A large-scale study involving thousands of participants found no self-esteem differences between adoptees and non-adoptees, regardless of whether they were adopted across-race or within-race. Another study found that adult Korean-American adoptees (adopted in childhood by white families) were just as likely as white adoptees to agree that “I am happy with being a member of my ethnic group,”.
• One of the main benefits or positives of transracial adoption is the higher availability of children. It is a fact that there is a greater demand of children of the same race as the parent and hence there are more number of transracial children available to be adopted in all parts of the world, thus making the process easier.
• There is an added advantage of being able to celebrate double the number of festivals and cultural occasions when one opts for transracial adoption. This can create an inspiration for others around you as well and may not make the child feel away from his/her own culture.
• With children who are adopted into homes that are of a different ethnic background and race, there is an opportunity for children and families to embrace diversity that may not have existed prior to the adoption. Children can benefit from a multitude of opportunities that will expand their cultural horizons.
• When a child has created an identity for herself by being taught about where she comes from, it opens her up to be accepting of different ethnic backgrounds and races. This is how the child can become open to learning about other ethnic backgrounds and cultures.
  
• Children who have been adopted into homes that are of a different ethnic background and race will often handle identity concerns better than most people because of the simple fact that they cannot act as if they are like everyone else. Younger children who are adopted transracially are able to deal with any adoption insecurities they may have before they become young adults.
• Though racial stereotypes and discrimination are still pervasive in society, and transracially adopted children benefit from families who are aware of these issues and open to discussions about them, both within the family and within broader society. Nor does the research mean that identity development will always be smooth sailing for adoptees.
