We have a family tradition where all my relatives comes to my grandmother’s maternal home to spend the new years. My family is huge as my grandmother has 8 siblings in total of which each one has at least 2 kids who are married with children themselves. Thus it makes for a big family with around 50 members. During the New Year’s every family contributes a sum to the family head for the expenses which includes food for the festivities. Large meals are prepared for the entire family . Although the house is big and sits on 5 acres of land, it cannot accommodate all the members; hence half of them stay at a hotel close by. Most of the time it is a 3 day event, but some may stay longer. The children come up with different activities to entertain other by putting up group dances, fashion shows etc. The night usually ends in a jam session. This tradition has been going on for almost a decade now
The reason why it has not stopped is because people from far come to the city just for this event and thus get to meet everyone and catch up. My family is high on family values. Also there are a lot of aged members in the family and we want to keep this tradition going on also for them.
Although I’m part of the individualistic culture, our family is big on family. Our grandparents have instilled family values, which are passed on to the newer generation by their parents. IT is always fun to see your family and make memories. Traditions are also opportunities for families to bond and create wonderful memories that one can cherish forever. Traditions keep families together which sort of forces people to meet with one another and interact.
