Sixteen years after the end of the
Vietnam war, the United States and
Vietnam signed a free trade agreement.
In December 2001, Vietnam
agreed to lower import tariffs and
restrictions on U.S. investments in
that nation. In return, the U.S.
agreed to dismantle discriminatory
trade barriers on Vietnamese
exports.
