Describe and analyze the political, economic and ideological causes and consequences of the Vietnam War?
Causes of the Vietnam war were derived from the consequences of the civil war being the threat that communism was expanding all over south-east Asia. Both Soviet union and united states would carry out fights via their client states.
Before second world war Vietnam was part of the French empire but during the war, it was overrun by the Japanese. However, as the Japanese retreated, Vietnam formed its own government led by Ho Chi Minh. Now by the end of the war, South Vietnam was given back to the French but North Vietnam was in the hands of the Chinese which treated them badly and the support for Hochi Minh grew. In 1946, Chinese pulled out of North Vietnam and French announced their intentions to regain the northern part as well. The war started in the same time period and the French got into difficult military position as even after getting support from America they were not able to cope with the Vietminh's guerilla tactics. Now, Vietnam was being supported by communist China led by Mao Zedong in 1949. In 1953, French finally pulled out from Vietnam and in the next year, it was decided to divide the country into two at the 17th parallel.
