In Papua New Guinea and other countries mouths harps are sometimes used as a substitute method for speech. One use in Papua New Guinea of this speech substitute is when a male seeks the affection of a woman he uses the susap to posses love-controlling magic that can attract the woman's love. In this sense when a man is rejected it is not necessarily based on looks but rather a lack of talent playing the susap or perhaps he is in need of a better susap. When studying Papua New Guinea one is presented with a very diverse set of cultures. As a country there are roughly 5 million inhabitants yet there are more than 700 languages spoken. It's precolonial history dates back about 50,000 ago and is thought to be linked with that of Aboriginal Australia though similarities. Most groups of people raise livestock and grow crops for personal use instead of profit, a practice called subsistence farming. Through missionaries many local traditions were lost or changed such as dancing that was considered too immoral. However many customs have been reestablished, and tourist are visiting the island for the elaborate dress and various cultural activities of the different ethnic groups.
