1. The figure below shows a square foundation which applies a load of 63 kN/m2 at the ground surface. The soil profile consists of 3 clay layers where the coefficient of volume compressibility for the clay falls linearly from 0.05 m2/MN at the ground surface to 0.025 m2/MN at the bottom of layer 3. The stress change distribution with depth due to the foundation load is shown in the table.

a) Calculate the total consolidation settlement at the centre of the foundation above?

b) A similar foundation was constructed on a different site where 7m of sand overlies 7m of clay over a bed of impervious rock. The coefficient of consolidation for the clay is 0.7 m2/year and the coefficient of volume compressibility 0.05 m2/MN. In Oedometer tests on a 19 mm thick sample of clay from the site, 90% consolidation was reached at 76 minutes. How long would it take the clay to reach the same degree of consolidation on site?

c) Calculate the permeability of the clay in part (b).

Design a trapezoidal channel to pass a discharge of 10m3/s and the channel will be excavated through rock by blasting. The topography in the area is such that a bottom slope of 1 in 4000 will be suitable. Assume that n = 0.030 and select a value for the side slope, Z, as 1 horizontal to 4 verticals. Sketch the diagram for all calculated dimensions.

A department in the facility required 12,250 units of raw materials to produce a TV. The company is deciding wither to buy or make raw materials. The fixed and variable cost of building (manufacturing) the raw materials are $20,000 and $5, respectively. Also, the fixed and variable costs for buying the raw materials are $400 and $7, respectively. Use the breakeven analysis methods to decide if the company has to purchase or manufacture the raw materials.

Non of the above

The company must purchase the raw materials

The company must make the raw materials

It will cost the company the same to make or buy the raw materials
