Prevention in mental health aims to reduce the incidence, prevalence,and recurrence of mental health disorders and their associated disability.Preventive interventions are based on modifying risk exposure and strengthening the coping mechanisms of individual.Tertiary prevention focuses on improving functioning, minimizing the impact an illness, and helping to prevent or delay further complications for people with mental health disorders and illness.CMHCs also make a significant contribution to such interventions through their work in outpatient , inpatient, and home-based care to clients across the life span. Broader access to care, and the emphasis on care coordination and integrated health homes under the ACA, will create additional opportunities and challenges for improving mental health and linkages to services and supports.
Tertiary prevention helping people living with mental health problems to stay well that is supporting those with mental health problems to stay well and have good quality of life.It empower people experiencing problems to manage their own symptoms as much as possible. Tertiary prevention is seen as distinct, but complementary to treat for mental health problems and is often carried out in community, rather than clinical, settings.
Examples of tertiary prevention include,
.support groups that allow members to share strategies for living well.
.vocational rehabilitation programs to retain workers for new jobs when they have recovered as much as possible.
.The nurse who teaches a client to cook meals, make a grocery list, and establish a budget is implementing care with in the parameters of tertiary prevention .Tertiary prevention consist of services aimed at reducing the residual effects that are associated with severe and persistent mental illness. It is accomplished by preventing complications of the illness and promoting rehabilitation that is directed toward achievement of maximum functioning.
