you’ll need to read this week’s lecture – The 25 Skills Every Speaker Must Have - by Andrew Dlugan. After reading the article mentioned about 25 skills identify two or three points that really stood out to you on the list. Why did they stand out? Why are they important for public speaking? Would you look for these skills when analyzing and critiquing other speakers? Were there any points you did not consider as part of public speaking?
Vary vocal pace, tone, and volume: In public speaking, this is one of the most important aspects. The tone, volume and pace of speaking is usually the first thing the audience notices. Based on these factors the audience is likely or unlikely to focus on what the speaker is saying. The very content of the speech is not as important as much as the delivery . The content may be wonderful, but if the pace is too fast or if it is monotonous, the audience may not even pay attention to it. I would definitely look for these skills when analysing public speakers, as the speech delivery has to effective in order for the audience to get anything out of it.
Research a topic: This is also a very important part in public speaking. If the the topic is well known and researched, then the speaker is also confident. Many a times, the speaker may be very articulate and communicate very well, but if the topic is not researched then it is no value. The speaker will lose all the credibility they have if the content is not accurate or valid. The speaker has to make sure that all the facts and data they are speaking about is all credible and not false, and also they have to be equipped with all the information about the topic they are speaking.
The point "Handle unexpected issues smoothly" may not considered a part of public speaking, as it is a general point which talks about handling unexpected situations, but is not particularity connected with public speaking skills.
