The northern and southern sections of united states developed along different lines. The southern remained a predominatly agraian economy while the north became more and more industrialized. The ten causes of the civil war are:
1) Slavery- Indirectly slavery was a cause of the war. most southerns did not own slaves and would not have fought for the protection of slavery. However they believed that the north had no constitutional right to free slaves held by citizens. England states were responsible for the development of slavery in America, Southerns saw morality claims by the north as blatant hypocrisy. The agraian south utilized slaves to tend its large plantations and perform other duties. On the eve of civil war some 4 million africans and their descendants toiled as slave laborers in the south.
2) Decesion- Dred scott was a slave who sought citizenship through the American legal system, and whose case eventually ended up in supreme court. He denied hus request stating that no person with African blood could become a U.S citizen.
3) Tariff- Prior to the war about 75% of the money to operate the Fedral Government was derived from the southern states via unfair sectional tariff on imported good and 50% of the total 75% was from just 4 Southern states-Virdinia-North carolina South Carolina and Georgia. Only 10% to 20% of this tax money was being returned.
4) Cultural Differences- Southerns and Northerns were of different Genetic Lineages. Southerns were primarily of Western English, Scottish and Irish lineage whereas Northerns tended to be of anglo- Saxon and Danish extraction.
5) States Rights- It refers to the struggle between the federal government and individual states over plotical power. In the civil war era, this struggle focused heavily on the institution of slavery and whether the fedral government had the right to regulate or even abolish slavery within an individual state.
6) Underground Railroad- Some abolitionists actively helped runaway slaves to escape via " the underground railroad" and there were instancesin which men, even lawmen, sent to retieve runaways were attacked and betean by abolitionist mobs.
7) Control of Western Territories- The North wanted to control Western States and Territories such as Kansas and Nebraska. They passed laws against slavery that Southerns considered punitive. These political actions told Southerns they were not welcome in the new ststes and territories.
8) John Brown - In Kansas, particularly, violent clashes between proponents of the two ideologies occured. One abolitionist in particular became famous or infamous, depending on the point of view- for battles that caused the death of pro slavery in Kansas.
