Expert Solution

What are group bonuses and team awards?

Group Bonus: It can be defined as an incentive given to a group of employees who has given a task as a group and the incentive is divided among them on various basis like proportion of time worked, rank held etc.

Team Award: It is awarded to a group of employees who worked on a project and is given as a recognition of their hard work.

How can this encourage group or team performance?

This can encourage group or team performances since it recognizes the talent and hard work of the awarded or earned group of employees. Also it gives a friendly competitive environment in the organization which in turn increases the efficiency of the employees.

How can this hinder group or team performance?

Sometimes it can have negative effects on groups or team performances. Internal conflict is one such problem that arises because since it is awarded to a group of employees there is a possibility that an undeserving candidate recieving the bonus because of their team mate. And this will not particularly benefit him/her in improving his/her efficiency. Another thing is that the competition can increase the stress level of people and sometimes they can feel burdened for the sake of their fellow group mates. This could create stress, depression and other emotional conditions.

What if your pay at your job tied exclusively to the performance of work team? would you like this or dislike this?

If the pay is exclusively tied to performance of work team I would be dissappointed, because I believe employees should be given chances to improve both as an individual performer and also as a group performer. As mentioned earlier I would not want my hardwork to be used to benefit an undeserving person. At the same time I would like to work together with others to improve the general morale and belongingness of the organization. So personally I prefer a balanced bonus system of both group bonus/ team award and individual performance bonuses.
