‘For the performance appraisal (PA) process to proceed smoothly and to serve the desired purpose, it is essential that the organisation design and implement comprehensive, fair, and transparent systems and processes that are explicitly shared with both supervisors and subordinates’ (Varma, Budhwar & Norlander, 2017, p. 283). Having said that, there are several common evaluation errors in PA that may occur. Critically compare the various possible appraiser errors, particularly those arising from the supervisor-subordinate relationship.

Answer) Following are the errors which can happen during performance appraisal with onus on suprrvisor-subordinate relationship

  • Subjectivity bias-At times supervisor can have subjective bias towards or against a subordinate which can take precedence over fair performance appraisal.
  • Recency bias-A recent good performance overshadows whole year 's poor perfotmance.
  • Team 's performance overshadows employee's own performance leading to free ridership culture where hard workers work and free riders benefits
  • Threat from subordinates-A common error is when supervisor feels threatened by rise of subordinate and looks for flaws which can lead to subordinate going for places where there talents are recognized.
  • Avoiding conflicts-An ertor where supervisors avoid conflicts by giving everyone similar reviews and leading to demoralisation of deserving employees.
  • Settling scores-A subordinate didn't follow supervisor's orders because s/he was able to figure out that strategy wouldn't be good based on analysis ,now supervisor may use this appraisal to settle scores.
  • Appraisal as a casual affair-Probably one of the most demoralizing appraisal is when appraisal is more of a formality and you do not get asked about your inputs or challenges and you feel not valued.

In conclusion performance appraisal is something which employees look forward to,an unfair appraisal means deserving and hard working employees will take the message that company is unprofessional while free riders will continue to free ride leading to downfall of company.
