DMC Company
DMC Company is a textile manufacturing company that specializes in developing embroidery and crotchet threads, knitting and tapestry yarns among other textile-derived products. DMC (Dollfus-Mieg and Company) was founded in the year1746 in Mulhouse, France by Jean-Henri Dollfus. Most of its textile products are cotton derived. Notably, the products are manufactured from raw cotton imported from all over the world. The manufacturing process for their products starts from acquiring the raw materials for their factory. The raw material, which is cotton, is then subjected to a series of steps and processes.
Thread manufacturing process
First, when cotton is harvested from the field, it undergoes ginning. This is where the harvested cotton balls are fed into a cotton gin which separates the cotton fibers from the seeds, stems and leaves. In the gin, cotton fibers are pulled by a rotating saw through a grating which is too narrow such that seeds cannot go through. The ginned cotton is then packed in compressed bales for transportation to the factory for further processing. Once the bale is opened, the cotton still contains other vegetable substances. It is poured into a picker machine which beats the cotton to loosen it up and fed through a series of rollers which removes the vegetable contaminants. It is fed through more rollers until it comes out in form of a soft fleecy sheet called a lap.
The lap undergoes another process called scutching which is the cleaning of cotton to remove the remaining seeds. In scutching, the cotton passes between parallel rollers where it is struck by iron while it passes through. The iron strikes out any remain seeds. At the same time, scutched cotton is blown into a cotton chamber where carding takes place. Carding is the process where the cotton fibers are separated to form a loose strand. The carding machine consists of a series of rotating rollers with teeth. As the cotton progresses, the teeth become finer and finer pulling the fibers closer joining them into slivers. These slivers then undergoes drawing where they are joined together to form thicker strands called slubbings which are used in the spinning process.
Spinning takes places when cotton is blown to a rotating drum attaching to the tail of already formed yarn on the drum continually drawing out cotton from the chamber. The thick yarn is then thinned, twisted and wound into bobbins. The yarn from the bobbin is folded and twisted to make it stronger and then gassed to remove any protruding strands. Gassing is carried out when the twisted yarn is rapidly passed over burning Bunsen burn flames which burns out the protruding strands. The yarn can them be dyed and wound into desirable threads and stored for sale.

Emirates Airline
Emirates Airline started its flights in 1985 with two airplanes and has since then grown to possess a fleet of 239 airplanes flying to over 140 destination making it the fourth largest airline in the world. A subsidiary of the Emirates Group which is fully owned by the government of Dubai’s Investment Corporation of Dubai, it is the largest airline in the Middle East providing passenger flight services and cargo services to all the major cities of the world. The services provide by Emirates Airline are transportation services which customers access through a series of steps.
Emirates Airline Service Process
The first step before a customer can access their flight services, is to check in to the airport. This is the process where passengers presents themselves at the airport to an airline for approval before travel. Check in may also be carried out over the internet where passengers verify their details via the Emirate’s website. During this process the airline allows passengers to make changes to their sitting preferences, destinations and others. Passengers hand over their boarding pass for inspection and give away any luggage that they are not allowed to enter an airline with. During checking in, passenger identity is registered by validating a passenger’s documents such as tickets, visas, and other immigration documentations that may be necessary.
Baggage registration then takes place. If the baggage is above the permitted weight limit, the passenger’s luggage is checked by airline security, sealed, labelled and handed over to an airline agent. After baggage registration, a passenger is allowed to board the aircraft. After landing, passengers proceed to check out through the airline’s check-out counters to collect their luggage.
Differences and Similarities
The manufacturing and service industries differ in several ways. For example, DMC requires raw materials to process during the manufacturing stages into the finished products they eventually sell to their customers. Emirates airline on the other hand does not require any raw materials. It only requires the presence of the customer who will receive the service directly without intermediate transformations. Secondly, the concept of production and consumption can be separated in manufacturing, but it cannot in the service industry. In manufacturing, products can be produced without the presence of the consumer but in the service industry the consumer must be present to receive the service.
The two industries are similar in that they are both consumer oriented. Their services and products are tailor made for the appeal of their customers. For example, DMC introduces several types of tapestry thread after consumer demand while Emirates airline adds more flights to certain cities due to high demand. In both companies, customer introduced variability is present. In DMC requests made by customers introduces variability in the products they produce, while in Emirates airline efforts customers are willing to put in introduces variability in that the airline has to come up with a way to cater for them such as make online check-ins possible and therefore more convenient.
