9 What are some of the psychological and emotional changes for elders? Include the issue of depression in this answer? What types of therapies work? Do Intelligence and Creativity Decline with Age?
Roleless role: The need for this is primarily the rest of our body, in this phase not only bodily aspects get a better pace also creatively also we need this shift to come out of what we are used to and discover a new side of this body, mind, heart, and soul. Well in elders this change can bring upon two sides, one is depression other is creativity depending upon how they accept it and they learn to take the life in a new pace and pattern as bodily and societal functions decline.
Volunteering: In elderly persons, it is likely according to proven studies that the more they voluntarily engage the more they enjoy the latter life of retirement and do not think too much about what are the functions they are losing in this age stage. The change that is seen is because of their declining body functions generally they can not engage in many activities some end up feeling as unworthy while others discover a new portrait of themselves of new possibilities. Since in this age experience and wisdom is very sharp they choose very wisely in which activities to engage, and they generally engage only in those activities or relations which have the most meaning for themselves.
Roles as grandparents: This is very subjective, it depends upon the family structure, ethics of family, the amount of their presence in the family. In the proper time(in this old age) if they don’t find their proper in their children’s children-life it’ll cause disharmony inside of them. Their whole life they look up to this point of life and if they don’t accomplish it they do not find satisfaction and meaning in life. And one of the most important resources of creativity of a person’s life majoritively comes from grandparents and that is “stories”, they have so many stories and experiences from their own lives to share. Oftentimes children will listen to grandparents even when they don’t listen to their own parents. This is not just a child’s need to belongingness but the grandparents need too of belongingness.
Consultants: Often they are not abandoned in their own families and they lose their authorities. In those times, not holding the discouragement and getting depressed and seek a consultant for emotional wellbeing and to cope up with the stress. To leads an efficient life.
Entrepreneurs: These people in their aging have gained a lot of experience. Hence they can be of great help for their family as well as society. They can be better entrepreneurs, practical oriented, prudent. They also need influences that can motivate them.
Discrimination: This is important for their psychological and social status. They should not be discouraged from their mistakes or being too strict because of their demeanor. These periods require a proper way to communicate with them to help them feel valued and keep the aesthetic of the family.
Ageism: This is very common to see discrimination against individuals or groups on the basis of their age. This practice requires scrutiny for us to keep a better social environment.
Transcendent thinking: Their life and their value system keep up certain priorities. This is to say that their relationships determine the success or failure of their organization. Wellness comes with good relationships and good bonds with people.
ADLs and IADLs: Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) & Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) are very important factors, especially for professionals who work in aging. These represent the key tasks in life that people need to manage, in order to live at home and be fully independent.
