You are caring for a patient whose family members include other medical professionals (e.g. staff nurse, nurse practitioner, physician). The family is frequently critical of the patient’s management and is constantly making suggestions regarding nursing care. How do you respond?
1 ) while planning a conference there are some strategies to be followed.
* Include family members, main consultant, referral doctors and nurses in multi disciplinary team meeting.
* Discusss the plan of care , treatment outcome and prognosis of the patient.
* Clarify the patient and his or her family member's doubts.
* Allow them to raise any doubts.
* If the treatment is costly discuss regarding it. And take appropriate decision.
* Always respect the patient rights.
2 ) visiting patients in critical care unit needs some restriction because there is a greater chance to get infection to the patient and vice versa. Moreover they are immunocompromised, so it is important to restrict open visitation. The relatives will be more anxious , but explain to them regarding its drawbacks.
3 ) It is always important to respect the patient rights .In such scenarios explain wisely regarding its consequences..they always have the right to make suggestions. But the main consultant will decide whether to implement it.nurses should behave very politely and explain to them.follow the doctor's advice prior to any single procedure.
