When you hear the word diversity mentioned in the workplace, in the media, or in casual conversation, what meaning do you assign this term?
Does a particular race, ethnic group, or other minority group come to mind when you think of diversity? Does one of these groups pertain to you?
Do you think the majority of people in our culture:
Respect cultural differences among groups of people.
Show indifference to cultural differences.
Lack respect for cultural differences. Explain each choice.
If you were to make a suggestion about how our culture should handle diversity over the next decade, what would it be?
Write a brief reflection paper specifically addressing the following issues:
What did you discover was the general attitude toward diversity in our culture?
Is diversity more associated with one race, ethnic, or other minority group than with others? If so, explain why this might be the case.
Diversity is composed of different individuals having a wide variety of characteristics, experiences and background working together to achieve a common goal which are not limited to religious, social or political beliefs, gender, age, ethinicity, education, sexual orientation ,geaographical location etc.
No, none of these groups come t my mind when I think of diversity. These groups doesn't pertain to me.For me, diversity doesn't restrict itself to a particular group or race.As mentioned above, people with different background, groups, races etc., working towards a common goal define diversity.
No,the majority people in our culture doesn't respect the cultural differences among the group of people.People are differentiated on the basis of caste, religion, race, creed. The best examples is the dispute over Ram Mandir and Babri Mosque in Ayodhya between Hindus and Muslims.
Few people show indifference to cultural differences with the growing cultural awareness, appreciating and valuing others culture, ideas and differences while not imposing one's own culture on to them, resisting positive or negative stereotypes.
But there is another section of individuals who lack respect for cultural differences as these are people who get uncomfortable when it comes to breaking culturally accepted norms,They impose their own culture and ideas on to others, while resisting to value others culture. They get involved in untrue stereotypes whch are unreliable too.
In my views, if we keep aside our prejudices or biases, and be open and friendly to people to learn about their culture and also repect and accept them, diversity can be handled in the perfect way.Cultural awareness through interacting with individuals of different cultures and also respecting and accepting them is an important factor.Learning about the dimensions of diversity at school is very imprtant for kids as they become close-minded.Avoiding stereotypes , be it positive or negative can also help to solve cultural differences.Stereotypes are unreliable and untrue.
The general attitude towards diversity in our culture depends on the oppportunities and situation people have.Breaking culturally- accepted norms makes people uncomfortable.Diversity is followed at some places like workplaces etc.but the discrimination on the basis of caste, creed ,race and various other factors is followed with one race, minority group or ethnic.Wrong stereotypes, imposong one's own culture, resisting to accept others culture, not accepting and learning from our own mistakes can bring diversity in culture and as a whole. At some places, cultural awareness have been spread to accept and respect others culture.Need to learn factual information about people and culture helps to resolve cultural differences among people.Giving knowledge and awareness programmes to kids will help bring a better future for all of us.
