Howard Huges and Case Sudy
How did such a vibrant man become an eccentric recluse?
200 words at least please
Howard Huges, a man with many
qualities, was a dedicated, determined, passionate and creative
aeronautics engineer, pilot, filmmaker and a successful
businessman. From holding multiple aviation records to being an
Academy Award Winner, it would not have been incorrect to consider
him a social being, who would stay amidst people, with the
limelight focused on him. But, what turned out to be the most
prominent part of his personality was his contamination-related
fears or irrational fear of germs. This embarked the reduction of a
vibrant billionaire, at the top of the world to a seemingly
pitiable and an eccentric recluse, creating a 'germ-free zone'. His
case proved the fact that money cannot buy happiness.
One of Howard's characteristics, which received significant
attention was his indulgence in women. His womanizing resulted in
him contracting an infection via sexual intercourse. He then
started recognizing people as objects, to be kept at a safer
distance from him. Therefore, he became a recluse, with a strong
and irrational desire to stay away from people in a 'safe
room'.
The relatively mild symptoms (like covering the wheel of an aeroplane as protection against germs, carrying personal soap bar to use in a public restroom and washing hands in an atypical manner) became extremely severe like washing hands until they bleed and following extremely complicated and elaborate routines. Thus, it can be said that Howard Huges was extraordinarily genius that inevitably made him a social being, surrounded by people and at the same time his exceptional fear of germs or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), motivated him to be withdrawn and staying away from people.
