Howard Schultz is an American businessman who served as CEO (1987–2000, 2008–17) of Starbucks, a coffeehouse chain that he helped transform into a worldwide presence.
Starbucks Corporation is an American multinational chain of coffeehouses and roastery reserves . The company was founded in 1971 by Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl, and Gordon Bowker.
How did Howard Schultz start Starbucks?
Howard Schultz was a communications graduate of Northern Michigan University. He worked at a ski lodge in Michigan for one year. He then took up a job in New York city as a salesman for xerox, and was recruited by Swedish kitchenware manufacturer in 1979 to be general manager of its U.S. subsidiary, Hammarplast. At Hammarplast, Schultz was responsible for the coffee machine manufacturer's U.S. operations. In 1981 he visited the Starbucks Coffee Company in Seattle, Washington to fill their plastic cone filter orders. In 1982 Schultz was hired at Starbucks as the director of retail operations and marketing. Schultz was exposed to Coffee in Italy on a buying trip to Milan, Italy in 1983.On his return, he worked to persuade company owners Jerry Baldwin and Gordon Bowker to offer traditional espresso beverages in addition to the whole bean coffee, leaf teas and spices. Schultz left Starbucks in 1985 to to start his own business. Later the founders decided to sell the company to Howard Schultz when he decided to make the coffee bean store a coffeeshop serving espresso-based drinks. And he became chairman in 1985.

* In 1988, Starbucks became one of the first companies in America to give health insurance to all its employees including part time workers, a benefit that was unheard of at the time, especially in retail.
* In 1991, Starbucks became the only company to give stock ownership to all employees. It is known as Bean Stock. Bean Stock has generated more than $1.5 billion in pre-tax gains for the company’s baristas and managers, helping some put down payments on homes, finance cars, pay off loans, even pay for weddings.
* In 2014, Starbucks and Arizona State University created the first-of-its kind program which allows all employees at Starbucks working 20 or more hours a week to qualify for a tuition-free college education.
