How technology might enhance and hinder the teaching strategy in nursing: 1) .One -on -one session 2) 2.Small group discussions and support groups. 3) .Demonstration and return demonstration. 4) Games 5) .Programmed Instruction 6) Self-learning
As technology in nursing and medicine has increased, so has technology’s role in nursing education.Technology also has the power to transform teaching by ushering in a new model of connected teaching.
*One on One Method of teaching :-
The main aim of the mentoring is to supervise the student during
the learning activities, to organize learning activities, to give
constructive feedback, to determine the students 'skills, attitudes
and behaviors, to express concerns about the students' performances
and to offer solutions . Technology supports an effective classroom
environment and clinical learning when used appropriately and
properly in nursing education.Distance education is the electronic
delivery of education to a distant setting via satellite, video,
audio, computer, multimedia technology, and similar tools. This
method includes methods such as computer-based teaching, online
teaching, and e- teaching.
*Advantage :-
With this method, the educational needs of a large body of students
are met wherever they are and whenever they want it. Web-assisted
distance learning facilitates learning in comparison to rather
traditional teaching methods .
*Disadvantage:-
Poor internet connection, certain teaching methods applied by the
teaching staff and some negative situations encountered in the time
of examination are some of the challenges that can be experienced
in the use of this method.
* Small Group discussion :-these formats offer the
opportunity for active student participation and make students
partners in the educational process.
Advantage:-
that students preferred to work in teams. In fact, when compared to
traditional lectures, small-group discussion methods have been
found to promote communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal
skills, prepare students for teamwork, provide more time for change
of thought and deeper understanding of problems, and create a more
motivational environment.a higher level of enjoyment and sense of
educational stimulation and engagement with the content.
*Disadvantage:-
some students preferred listening to teachers who knew the material
and did not think it possible for them to take responsibility for
their learning, the influence of cultural or motivational
differences, personality of participants, and logistical
issues.
*Demonstration:-
It is a presentation that shows how to perform an act or procedure,
or how to use a piece of equipment, or how to communicate with
patients and personnel.
*Advantage:-
A demonstration provides a concrete, realistic learning experience
that by its nature commands attention. It has the advantage of
using visual as well as oral perceptions, thus facilitating
learning. Other senses may also be used, such as smell or touch. he
demonstration provides a common experience for all the learners,
giving a basis for discussion to reinforce the learning.
Demonstrations can be used for individual or group teaching. They
also have the advantage of providing a n opportunity to learners to
sharpen their observational skills.
*Disadvantage:-
If the demonstration is too long for the time allotted, it will not
be possible to repeat difficult aspects of the demonstration or to
discuss questions.
*Gaming:-
It is an innovative teaching strategy that research has shown to be
effective for improving nursing student learning outcomes.
*Advantage:-
• Reduces stress and anxiety
• Stimulates interaction
• Reduces monotonous lessons
• Promotes teamwork
• Creates a conductive environment for increased learning and
retention of knowledge
• Enhances motivation
• Promotes a relaxed learning environment
• Adds entertainment.
*Disadvantage:-
Although the students' attention is gained through games, the
quality of their attentiveness may fall short of serious engagement
with the practice of nursing.
*Programmed instruction:-
In this method of presenting new subject matters to students in a
graded sequence of controlled steps. Students work through the
programmed material by themselves at their own speed and after each
step test their comprehension by answering an examination question
or filling in a diagram.
*Advantage :-
1. It is accompanied with a self explained set of instructions
.
2. It controls the individual differences of the learners.
3. It provides reinforcement of the learners.
4. It provides "Learning by doing "situation
5. It is designed in logical sequence of content Structure.
Difficult concepts can be taught effectively .
*Disadvantage:-
1. Lack of motivation.
2. Freedom of Choice is curtailed .
3. Costly
4. Blank and key terms are guessed.
5. Students follows a rigid line prescribrd by the programmer
*Self-directed learning: It is essential in
assisting nurses to meet the challenges presented in today's health
care environment. The concept of self-directed learning is based on
the principles of adult education and can take many different
formats.
Advantage :-
* educational improvement not only depends on the individuals’
basic knowledge, but also is closely related to factors, such as
having information about learning activities and the way of using
this knowledge.
Student can have his pace of learning and get detailed explanation
of various topics .
Disadvantage:-
It can be affected by different factors, such as the structure of
educational culture and personal and social factor
