How can you use what you learned about human development to provide optimal healthcare to all of your patients? Give two specific examples of how you can apply concepts or theories to potential healthcare scenarios. ( Piaget, Erikson)
Nurses in perticular are often calledupon to do so much more than simply administer medication and tends to the physicasl need of the patient.Anyone who is considering a career in nursing should understand the relationship between a persons medical and psychological needs. This is why the study of life span developmental psychology should be critical component to the training of every nurses.
As the part of underestanding your patients and how the nurse can serv them better is to get clear picture of what the varying stages of development are for each individual.Taking a developmental psychology class , that intensively focuses on how human grow and change over thr span of their life will help them to provide a better level of treatment.
Examples of concepts of learning theries apply in health care
1.Use of Piaget's cognitive developmental theory indesign health messages for childern
To be effective, presentation of health message for development of self-care agency must be age and developmentally appropriate. Blending cognitive development theories with selected foundational capabilities and dispositions from Self-care Deficit Nursing Theory (SCDNT) has reulted in five concrete factors for successfully designing and delivering heaith messages for optimal learning in children. The capacity to learn, requires perception, attention, play, communication, and memory.Actual ecidence of learning about healthy choices by elementary school- aged children is illustrated.Indications of success and defeciencies in design and delivary of health promoton messages during a school health fair are presented.
2. Applying Eriksons theory in health care
In health care settings.Erik Erikson's stages of development can be applied to bnetter understand a patients thought process and response toa perticular situation. It allows health care providers to provide more patient centered care by understanding the stage the patient may be going through. If the patient lacks the tools to deal with asituation ,a health care provider can use various techniques to equip the patient with necessary skill,Understanding the theory allows the health care providers to tailor their response to situations in an age/stage appropriate way based on developmental stage of patient from infancy to child hood. For an example, an infant may be crying because he does not understand what is happening around him and he is uncertain of his surroundings.while an elderly person may be crying because he understand what is happening but has no control over his diagnosis. The health care provider would respondto a crying infant defferently than crying adult, because the infant does not yet have the capacity bto understand while the adult does.
