steel structures advantages and disadvantages ?
Advantages:
steel is a metal that's why it canbe moulded and manufactured in any shape or desired cross- section some time built up section can also be made according to the demand.
The strength to weight ratio in case of steel is high that means even for a large construction the overall dead load will always be less than other construction materials like rcc and stone etc.
Homogeneity can be maintained precisely, which ensures it's strength and adequacy both in tension and compression.
It is ductile and malleable to some extent so that it canbe used in a larger variety of forms, be it sheet or as a steel wire it always meet the design demand.
In steel structures making connection is very easy like bolted connection can be made just drilling a hole into it to make a kind of hinge or fixicity can be provided by just welding....
Disadvantages:
Steel consists of iron and other metal so it's prone to corrosion very quickly hence to make it anti corrosion some kind of paints or galvanisation make it costly.
Due to temp variation steel structure causes unwanted deformation which is not desirable.
Buckling phenomena is quite observable in steel structures which is a matter of concern.
High skill labours are required and transportation of heavy steel members is difficult and costly sometimes.
