Schools many not use “ hostile and abusive racial/ethnic/national origin mascots, nicknames or imagery”, because “The NCAA objects to institutions using racial/ethnic/national origin references in their intercollegiate athletics programs”, as it does not “adhere to the core values of the NCAA Constitution pertaining to cultural diversity, ethical sportsmanship and nondiscrimination”, due to “the negative impact of hostile or abusive symbols, names and imagery”.

If the group denoted by such a mascot gives their explicit approval, then the mascot may continue. For example, “Four institutions were allowed to keep their nicknames — Central Michigan University, Florida State University, Mississippi College and the University of Utah. All four institutions successfully appealed the policy by providing the NCAA with written endorsements from American Indian “namesake” groups in their respective state”
