The peptide hormone (protein based hormone) Oxytocin is normally produced in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary. Where is the polypeptide strand of oxytosin synthesized? A. Ribosomes in the cytoplasm B. RNA polymerase in the nucleus C. Ribosomes associated with the rough endoplasmic reticulum D. Ribosomes associated with the smooth endoplasmic reticulum E. Golgi apparatus
Oxytocin is a hormone that is synthesized by the hypothalamus. It is a 9 amino acid peptide hormone that is synthesized by the ribosomes present on the ER. Oxytocin is a secreted hormone and hence, it will be synthesized via the secretory pathway. It is formed as a precursor protein in the ribosomes attached to rough ER, bound to a carrier protein neurophysin. It passes through the RER to the Golgi apparatus, where it is packaged into the neurosecretory granules. When oxytocin passes to the neurohypophysis, neurophysin is cleaved to release oxytocin.
Free ribosomes in cytoplasm will synthesize soluble proteins that reside in cytoplasm. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum lacks ribosomes and hence is not involved in proteins synthesis. Golgi apparatus only packages the protein into secretory granules and catties out post translational modifications. RNA polymerase in the nucleus is involved in transcription and not protein translation.
Right choice: C. Ribosomes associated with the rough endoplasmic reticulum.
