A knowledge management system or KMS could be defined as any IT system that helps in effective storing and tetriving of knowledge to improve the collaboration, understanding and the allignment of the process. This system can exists in any organisation or within a group where the effective use of knowledge is being done for example the users in the management or the customers.

Expert system on the other hand is a kind of artifical intelligence and a part of knowledge management system. It helps in making the providing the valid decision making abilties to any expert to take the possible good decision. They are designed essentially to solve complex problems by taking the data and inputs inside, converting them into relevant information and knowledge and then retrieving the right output to the right user.

Drawing on my understanding, I would essenfiallg say that expert system is a knowledge menagement system only. Every system which employs the knowledge and data in any form, uses the data and IT programming to show the relevant output and decisions to the right users is a knowledge management system. It is rightly said that they are the same thing as expert system also has an ability to perform the same tasks and activities, taking the input, processing and converting the input and showing the relevant data to the experts for decision making, thus making it a knowledge management system only.
