knowledge management systems are at the core of innovation and business process improvement. The knowledge management value chain, is the entire set of business processes developed in an organization to create, store, transfer, and apply knowledge assets. What knowledge management product did YouTube choose? What major challenges did they face during the implementation? If you were in charge of this project, what recommendations or actions would you have taken to improve the outcome?
1. YouTube chose the integrated knowledge management model which includes a series of knowledge management processes such as knowledge discovery, knowledge assessment, knowledge sharing, knowledge reuse, knowledge creation and knowledge acquisition. In this way, YouTube developed an integrated approach for knowledge management focussing on key aspects of business process improvement and delivering results through it.
2. Major challenges:
A. The model selected by YouTube focussed on larger aspects and company wide improvement but did not drill down to the team wide or department wide structural changes and also employee work flow changes.
B. Also there was no focus on doing selective process improvement. There was a requirement of selective process improvement rather than overall process improvement. In certain aspects, the earlier process was better and did not require any change and YouTube must have focussed on selective processes requiring improvement rather than overall process.
3. Recommendations to improve the outcome:
A. I would have identified the critical parametres which impact the organization's performance and focussed first on those parameters.
B. I would have done selective process improvement rather than overall business process improvement. This means the processes which were outdated and affected organization's performance should have been improved.
C. I would have created a more detailed plan drilling down to employee level rather than only focussing broadly on organization level.
