Lilian wald was born in 1867 in a Jewish family. She attended 2 years nursing program. She worked in a womens medical college.

She is the founder of public health nursing.

She started visiting nurses service in Newyork

She organised the home nursing classes.

With her colleagues and patrons friends her Mission Visiting nursing service VNS or NY settlement started from 2 in 1893 to 92 in 1913.

The nurses educated the tenements about preventative health and infectious disease control, disease transmission and personal hygiene. Also they provided emergency and follow up care. They also provided housing, education, recreational activities. 1912 she founded National organisation of public health nursing and chaired the first president of it.

She persuaded Columbia university to start series of lectures for prospective nurses. She is also the  first professor in nursing. Now the strength of VNS is 13000 supporting 700000 patients annually.
